Pterostilbene powder (trans-3,5-dimethoxy-4-hydroxystilbene) is a naturally occurring polyphenol molecule in plants. Pterostilbene was named after the Pterocarpus family plants, the first sources of pterostilbene to be found. Originally, the compound was isolated from the red sandalwood tree (Pterocarpus santalinus) and later from Pterocarpus marsupium. Pterocarpus plants have several names worldwide, including Paduak, Malabar kino Vijayasar, Narra, and Indian kino tree.

Some supplements are labeled “trans-pterostilbene,” not just “pterostilbene.” This compound has many names, one of which is trans-3,5-dimethoxy-4′-hydroxystilbene.

In chemistry, the word “trans” means certain atoms (or groups of atoms) are on opposite sides of a molecular physical structure. The term “cis” means that those atoms are on the same side of the molecule. Both trans- and cis-pterostilbene are found in nature, while the trans form is more stable.

Pterostilbene, without a modifier, generally default refers to the trans form. The cis-type is always called cis-pterostilbene.

Pterostilbene is a dimethyl ether analog of resveratrol and has many health benefits such as antioxidant, anticancer, antidiabetic, and antihyperlipidemic effects. The antioxidant effects make it an effective chemopreventive agent for many cancers.

The stronger pharmacological properties in pterostilbene than resveratrol have been attributed to its two –OCH3 groups. As a result, pterostilbene is more lipophilic which enhances its membrane permeability, bioavailability, and biological potency

Pterostilbene considerably altered the level of antioxidant enzymes in the brain tissue and reduces the oxidative stress. Pterostilbene significantly suppressed the level of inflammatory cytokines, inflammatory mediators and increased the level of anti-inflammatory cytokines
